Praveen served as Toastmaster with a theme about aliens and UFOs.
World UFO Day was July 2nd.
We had 15 members and 2 guests present.
Guests were Jason (invited by Praveen) and Adriane (a past member).
Scott opened the meeting with a speaking tip/exercise: He invited some members to the stage to receive applause, then he reminded us to be present and take in the praise. It can be uncomfortable.
We are moving forward with our open house/ice cream social on Monday August, 5th. Bring in your old Toastmasters magazines!
We will include them with membership info at the open house.
Other Highlights:
· Praveen started with a great transition to the introduction of roles by saying, “now we know there are 200+ billion stars in the Milky Way, lets meet some of tonight’s stars.”
· Ed’s word of the day was ‘flair.’ He chose that word after realizing that the Merriam-Webster word of the day was ‘nosegay,’ a small bunch of flowers!
· Elizabeth once again added some flair to the grammarian role by offering a lesson about the usage of every day vs everyday:
Everyday is an adjective used to describe things that (1) occur every day, or (2) are ordinary or commonplace. In the two-word phrase every day, the adjective every modifies the noun day, and the phrase usually functions adverbially.
Elizabeth also noted that we need to work on matching our tense when speaking.
· Robert did his icebreaker speech about many of the jobs he’s held (including paper boy, factory jobs, 1LT US Navy, UPS runner, and many more).
– Sarah reminded him to embrace any quivers or nervousness and push through!
· Jerome offered a great speech that got everyone thinking. He asked, “what’s your social DNA.”
– Nadine reminded Jerome to emphasized his words when trying to make a point·
Tony led table topics with an alien/UFO twist. Each participant selected 4 words from a saucer and had to work them into a sentence… many of the words had to do with extraterrestrial topics.
· Nicole was general evaluator and praised Scott and Elizabeth for adding value to their roles. “We’re not just here to speak, we’re here to learn!”
· Enyonam won table topics!
· Robert won best speaker!
· Sarah won best evaluator!
